Obama got this right...

But for the wrong reason!

Obama from 2001: "the Constitution is a document of negative liberties, says what the states can't do to you, says what the federal government can't do to you, but it doesn't say what the federal government or state government must do on your behalf"

Yes Mr. President, it is a document of negitive liberties for the exact reasons you state. It limits what the Government can do because the founders knew that the more government intervened in the human condition the more liberties it would be able to take from it's citizens. The framers knew that when the government started acting on the citizens behalf, it would eventually be acting on the governments behalf. They understood the adage "power corrupts, absolute power corrupts absolutely". One would think that a "Constitutional Scholar" (which our Commander-in-Chief claims to be) would understand that!

The Constitution was written in a way to protect us from ourselves. Human nature dictates that when one is given authority they believe they know what's best for those they have authority over. This authority, given to the wrong person, would lead to toltarianism. Our founding documents were written to discourage that.

We have inalienable rights, granted to us by our creator. The negative liberties Obama is complaining about are the ones that restrict what the government can do. Why? This should worry us all!
